False Death Certificate issued at Madurai Corporation

A Cyber Crime case has been registered in connection with the issue of false death certificates at Madurai Corporation. (Refer report here)

While the instant case could be a prank, it highlights the information risks that exist in many e-Governance projects. Unfortunately few administrators have any knowledge of information risks and criminals will have a field day as more and more Governance work is shifted to the computer platform.

For example, one can imagine that issue of false death certificates can easily be used for Insurance frauds or for criminals to escape detection. Though such cases might not have come to light, it can be presumed that several such cases must be in existence and are going undetected.

Governments should therefore consider incorporating information security into e-Governance programs.
