Digital Society Day 2007
October 17th is a special day for the Indian Digital Society. It was on this day in 2000 that a legal recognition was accorded to the Digital Society through the notification of Information Technology Act 2000. Electronic documents and Digital Signatures got legal recognition from this day. Digital Society Foundation , a Trust formed in Bangalore commemorates the day as "Digital Society Day".
The tradition to commemorate October 17 as the "Digital Society Day" started informally by Cyber Law College since 2001, was formalized in 2006 by Digital Society Foundation in 2006, when along with Computer Society of India (Bangalore Chapter) a colurful function was organized at Century Club. Honourable Justice N Kumar inaugurated the programme in which several eminent persons participated in a panel discussion on "Cyber Crimes" which followed.
This year, Digital Society Foundation (DSF) has again planned to conduct an event on October 17 to commemorate the birth of the Digital Society in India. Computer Society of India (CSI), IT Professionals Forum (ITPF) and RV Engineering College have already agreed to join hands with DSF in this year's celebration. RVCE is also conducting an Inter Collegiate Essay Competition amongst Engineering Colleges to mark the event and give away the prizes.
DSF had announced certain awards last year and the awards will also be given away during the function.
The theme for discussion this year is "Vision for an Indian National Cyber Security Force". This will be the topic for the Essay Competition and also a day long seminar to be held on October 17. Eminent Speakers from all over India representing different stake holders in Cyber Space are expected to participate in the programme.
